Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge 2017

On Friday 20 October 2017 our Year 10 students took part in the Jack Petchey Speak out Challenge workshop.

The workshop provides a chance for students to develop their public speaking skills and an opportunity to voice their views on the issues that matter most to them.

The sessions are facilitated by experience trainers provided by the Jack Petchey Foundation as part of this charitable organisation's national strategies to enhance opportunities for all young people.

Here is the feedback from on of the trainers, Jonathan Drew.

What a fantastic day on the Speak Out Challenge.  After a somewhat shaky and nervous start this turned into a wonderful training session with a group of very mixed ability yet highly intelligent, enthusiastic students. Once the ground rules had been laid the students were an absolute pleasure to work with, taking an active part in all of the tasks and exercises they were asked to perform throughout the day. I was surprised by their initial lack of self-confidence at the beginning of the day but as it progressed they managed to deliver and develop a range of focused, well-structured speeches by the end of the session. In short it was a very positive experience working with this year’s Year 10’s.

Here are some comments from some of teh students that took part

Oscar: (Went from 2 to 6 in confidence)

I think that this training was excellent and gave me the courage to speak-out.

Kemji: (Went from 5 to 8 in confidence)

I feel more confident and now understand the reason why public speaking is so important.

Diogo: (Went from 6 to 8 in confidence)

Great training. Personally I am very shy but the training changed a lot for me.

Sarah: (Went from 3 to 8 in confidence)

It was inspirational.

Ella: (Went from 3 to 5 in confidence)

It made me realise that I don’t have to be embarrassed in front of others and can say what I believe.

Thank you to Mr Rohomon who co-ordinates these sessions every year and good luck to the students that will now move forward to the school's final to select one student to compete at the regional finals.
